Tech Start Up

2016 — Current
SG Solutions Hub

I am currently working on an education startup, SGEducators. SGEducators is a social community for students, parents, and tutors to interact and share ideas, tips, and to participate in activities, talks, and workshops. This offer came about as an excellent opportunity, since my partner, who is my uncle, covers the managing costs of running the startup – it is a chance to start my own business without incurring costs and still, be getting a payslip. Since working on SGEducators, we have developed an education portal, built several supporting portals, and worked with a few clients to build their websites for their tuition centres. These sites were all designed and built on WordPress with the Divi theme by me, while the content was provided by my colleagues. Besides designing and building portals and sites, a core area of our work includes search engine optimisation (SEO). We have consistently ranked for keywords such as ‘Bishan Tuition Centres‘, ‘Economics Tuition‘, and ‘GP Tuition‘, and is looking to target more areas with the introduction of the SGEducators portal. Other areas of digital marketing, such as Facebook marketing and email marketing are also currently being explored. These are skills which I have picked up at work and during my free time.

Advertising

2013 — 2016
3AD Group Pte Ltd

Since 2013, I have worked for 3AD Group, a small, advertising firm specialising in shopping mall advertisements. 3AD was where I picked up most of my design skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, especially in the areas of Digital Imaging.

Singapore has long been known as a ‘Shopping Paradise’, with malls in every corner of the country, in neighbourhoods and in the city. Orchard Road has been named the best shopping street multiple times in the past. These shopping malls, largely owned by the big players, CapitaLand, Far East Organisation, and AsiaMalls, are constantly engaging shoppers with a campaign once every two months, celebrating major holidays such as Christmas & Chinese New Year, or the annual Great Singapore Sale.

3AD Group has identified shopping mall advertisements as an area to specialise in and has become the leader in this area, with accounts in Junction 8, Liang Court, and Orchard Central, to name a few. These are the accounts that I have constantly worked for; on the design or a pitch for the main visual of a campaign; or the layout and adaptations for its ATLs and BTLs; to other in-mall collaterals including, design for hoarding and shopping directory. Often, these projects require me to work with the creative director, copywriters, account-servicing managers, or fellow designers and interns, depending on each of our workloads.

In addition to shopping advertisements, 3AD also took on notable design accounts including from SATs (such as Scoot and Tigerair), Marina Bay Cruise Centre(MBCCS) and government projects, such as the Family Justice Courts of Singapore, all of which, I have designed for.

China Work Experience

2014
mhome, Shen Zhen, China

I have briefly worked in Shen Zhen, China, at mhome, a renovation tech startup, as the Graphic Design Brand Lead, in 2014. The opportunity came from the boss of Cilicon Faytory, whom I interned for during university. He was, at the time, impressed with what I had previously done for him, hence offered to fly me over to mhome where he is currently the creative director. During my short, 1-month stay at the company, I had a glimpse of how businesses operate in China and had also participated in the preparation for a major presentation at the official announcement of Ya Sha acquiring mhome. The works that I did was documented in my brand and advertising project for mhome. Given the chance, I will consider working in China or other parts of the world in the future.

Visual Communications

2009 — 2013
Nanyang Technological University,
School of Art, Design & Media

I graduated from Nanyang Technological University, School of Art, Design, and Media with a 2nd Upper-Class Honours in Fine Arts (Visual Communications). The major courses I took, include publication, corporate identity, packaging design, and other graphic design related classes. There were also numerous Art and Design History classes that require extensive writings and essays. In my final year, as part of my graduating thesis, I have put up an art installation, Questions to Heaven, in my school’s Final Year Project Exhibit.
